CEE Transportation Experts Receive ITS World Congress Award

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Cinzia Cirillo, along with Parthasarathi Lahiri, a professor in the University of Maryland (UMD) Joint Program in Survey Methodology, and graduate students Ying Han and Kartik Kaushik, has been awarded Best Paper in the scientific papers category for the North American region by the International Transportation Society (ITS). The award will be given during the 24th ITS World Congress in Montréal, Canada October 29–November 2, 2017.

The winning paper lays out a framework to forecast traffic up to 30 minutes into the future, something current techniques struggle to do. Cirillo and her team capitalized on the repeatability of traffic patterns to develop a basic framework that provides real-time predictions and scales up well with larger data sets and traffic networks.

This multidisciplinary research effort was partially conducted through UMD’s National Transportation Center, which specializes in transportation demand analysis, forecasting, and planning.
